Creating a Transparent GIF background using Adobe Photoshop CC
- Launch Photoshop CC
- Image (menu) > Mode > RGB Color (because it is impossible to edit an image in "Indexed Color" mode)
- Select (menu) > All
- Window (menu) > Properties (make sure there is a checkmark beside Properties)
- Window (menu) > Tools (make sure there is a checkmark beside Tools)
- Properties (window) > Right-click on the layer > Duplicate Layer...
- Hide (click on eye icon) the original layer
- Lock (click on padlock icon) the original layer
- Properties (window) > Click on the newly created duplicate layer (that is not hidden or locked)
- In the Tools window, Right-click on the Eraser Tool > select Magic Erase Tool
- Click on the image (and the new transparent area should show as a checkerboard pattern)
- File (menu) > Save As... > CompuServe GIF (or save as transparent PNG, but do not save as JPG)

- Note: JPG files cannot have transparent backgrounds. A JPG converted to a GIF may not be able to have a transparent background.

Creating a Transparent GIF background using PaintShopPro 9
- Launch PSP - (PaintShopPro)
- File (menu)
- Open
- Browse
- Open a graphic file
- Image (menu)
- Palette
- Set Palette Transparency
- Accept whatever changes that PSP says is necessary
- Set the transparency value
- Proof (button) - A checkerboard pattern shows the area that will be transparent
- OK
- File (menu)
- Save As
- Save as type GIF (or PNG) - (Make sure that you do NOT save the file as a JPG/JPEG)
- OK
- Replace existing file - Yes - (or you could give the file a new name)

Color Palette - checked
Open a GIF
Select Dropper from the Toolbar
Right-Click on the background colour you want to be transparent.
Selections (menu)
Select All

Modify
Transparent Color
Tolerance 200

Preferences
File Format Preferences
GIF tab
Set the transparency value to the background color
Ok

Save As
Save as type GIF
