iLink isn't the same as FireWire, that's why it's not called FireWire. iLink has 4 wires and is not powered. FireWire has 6 wires - 2 of them being power for peripherals.
Firewire was created by Apple and then submitted to the world standards committee, which has named it IEEE 1394. All Macs come with Firewire now.
