Situation Reversal - In the case of a Francophone in a situation where the conversation is started in English, any of the above roles could be reversed. Admittedly, I am writing this from the point of view of an Anglo. Situation reversal just never happens. Anglophones do not switch to French when an accent is detected.
«May I help you?»
Letter: I want to improve my French, but francophones are insisting on English
Even though I am a recent transplant from Ontario to Quebec and desperately want to improve my very basic French, I have encountered the following difficulties:
The local gas station attendant won’t speak to me in French. He wants to practise his English.
The bartender at my local pub won’t speak to me in French. She wants to practise her English.
My girlfriend’s hairdresser won’t speak to her in French. She wants to practise her English.
Our downstairs neighbour won’t speak to us in French. She wants to practise her English.
And because I am from English Canada, free French language tuition is unavailable to me, though it would be if I were a recent arrival to Quebec from anywhere else in the world.
All I want to do is learn and practise my French.
Does Premier Pauline Marois have any suggestions?
